Update October 2006

Exciting times lie ahead for the Chesil. Last December Planning Permission was granted for the proposed development in conjunction with our neighbours St John's Winchester Charity, and negotiations are nearing completion on the conditions that will attach to the consent. For the Chesil this will provide an extension to our existing medieval building to include a multi-purpose foyer, expanded rehearsal space and dressing rooms, enhanced facilities for the disabled, an easily accessed wardrobe, upgraded equipment and amenities. The cost is estimated in the region of £700,000.

As a major step forward in achieving our goal, the Chesil has (subject to contract) completed negotiations with St John's on the purchase of land needed for building our section of the development and this has been endorsed by unanimous agreement from the Members at our September AGM.

Thank you to everyone who supported our Film Gala - Pirates of the Caribbean II - in June. We were particularly delighted to see Luke de Woolfson's name in the cast credits. Luke appeared in productions during the 1990s, as a Youth Member of the Chesil.

We are grateful to The Mercers' Company whose donation to the appeal was amongst others received recently. There are many ways in which individuals and businesses can help our appeal and associate themselves with a project which will enhance enjoyment of the arts in Winchester for all.

Don’t forget too, that copies of Richard Green’s fascinating and well-researched History of St Peter’s Church (Chesil Theatre’s home) are also on sale, price £5.

20th December 2005. Planning application approved!

Winchester City Council have recently approved the Chesil Theatre's planning application for the proposed redevelopment. Appeal Chairman Tom Williams said:

"We are delighted to receive planning permission for what we have always thought of as an imaginative scheme. We couldn't have had a better Christmas present and can now face with confidence the task of raising funds to enable the scheme to be implemented.

This scheme shows how two local charities can work well together to produce something that will not only
benefit their own constituencies but also the wider Winchester Community.

I would like to pay tribute to the vision of St
Johns Winchester Charity who have enabled this opportunity to be grasped and look forward to a long and fruitful partnership with them"
