With the restoration of Charles II to the throne in 1660 the theatres re-opened after years of suppression under the Puritans. His reign also brought the emergence of the first actresses to appear upon the English stage

The apocryphal story is that one day the King was waiting for a play to begin and he asked "why is this play taking so long?" and he was told "the Queen is shaving", because men played all the parts, and that prompted him to say "let's have women on stage

The story of five of them is told in Playhouse Creatures by April De Angelis, the final production of the season at the Chesil Theatre Winchester. This moving and often comic account of the lives of Nell Gwynne, Elizabeth Farley, Rebecca Marshall, Doll Common and Mary Betterton gives a fascinating look at the precarious lot of women in the theatre, who had to rely on their male protectors and their own beauty to survive in this bawdy and troublesome time.
