The next production at The Chesil Theatre, Winchester, is a classic of 20th century drama.

Set in 1930s in depression-hit America, The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, tells of Amanda and her fight to find a future for her family after her husband deserts them.

She recalls the romance of her youth as a Southern belle and hopes for better things for her shy daughter, Laura and her son, Tom, a frustrated poet trapped in a mundane factory job and by the suffocating embrace of the family.

A possibility of escape comes with the arrival of a gentleman-caller.

Director, Tim Robbins, said: “This poignant play is both beautiful and tragic. Williams has drawn on his own life for the characters of Tom and Laura, two lonely people for whom dreams are precious. The fragility of Laura’s collection of glass animals is a metaphor for the delicate relationships between the characters.”

Tickets: £7 Monday, £10 Tuesday to Saturday from the Theatre Royal box office Jewry Street, Winchester, SO23 8SB Tel 01962 840440
