Myrtle has won a romantic fiction competition for women writers being run by feminist publishing house Love Is All Around.

The only problem is, Myrtle is really Leonard, divorced statistician and single parent. Despite his efforts at evasion, in order to claim the prize of a £15,000 publishing contract, Myrtle has to meet Harriet the publisher!

Increasingly desperate, Leonard pretends to be his non-existent Aunt Myrtle, but he fails to let his father and daughter in on the secret and his outrageous masquerade unleashes a hilarious chain of events.

Disguise, deception, subterfuge and love; Nobody's Perfect is an unstoppable theatrical treat.

Audition information. The Director writes:

IS YOUR ACTING AGE:

MALE:  early to mid forties or early to mid sixties ?

FEMALE:  seventeen or mid thirties to early forties   ?

THEN I NEED YOU

Reading Nobody’s Perfect I found I was permanently smiling and laughing out loud frequently.  This light hearted, humorous play has delightful banter between the family members; Leonard, Gus his father and Dee Dee his teenage daughter who all share a sense of humour.

Leonard knows he has a gift to write romantic fiction and accordingly enters a competition being held by Love Is All Around, an all female publishing house.  Obliged to adopt a female pseudonym he chooses the name Myrtle Banbury and hey, what do you know, Myrtle’s manuscript wins !

Harriet Copeland, publishing head, telephones to arrange to meet Myrtle to award the prize.  In panic Leonard pretends to be Myrtle, whom he says is his aunt.  Harriet persists in wanting to meet Myrtle in person – Leonard dons female attire and presents himself as his own aunt !  Practical subterfuge, yes . . but Leonard does not expect to fall for Harriet hook line and sinker.  What happens next ?

You’ll find out at the reading on Friday March 7th or by coming to see a performance between May 19th and 24th.

Nobody’s Perfect is written by Simon Williams, star of TV’s Upstairs Downstairs and Agony.  He played Leonard on tour, his real life daughter played Dee Dee with Stephanie Beacham as Harriet.

This is a fun play and will be fun to perform and to see and I believe fun to direct as well so I am looking forward, very much, to seeing you at the reading, on stage or in the audience.

Leonard    -  40/45, single parent, statistician and aspiring author.  (This is NOT a drag part. The actor has to be completely convincing as a woman)

Gus           -  60/65, Leonard’s father, a bit of a hippy, incorrigible rake.

Dee Dee   -  17ish  Leonard’s daughter, student, street wise.

Harriet       -  35/40, publisher, attractive, efficient.

Caroline Helke has kindly consented to be producer on this show and we both will be happily available to answer enquiries.
