The Director, Tom Williams, writes: "Poet, painter, musician, theatre director and Spain's most celebrated dramatist, Federico Garcia Lorca was murdered by Nationalist sympathisers at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Many of his passionate and lyrical plays focus on peasant life and the forces of nature, combining innovatory dramatic technique with Spanish popular tradition. Blood Wedding is set in a village in Andalusia, and tells the story of a couple drawn irresistibly together in the face of an arranged marriage. Written when Lorca was at the height of his powers, it is the play on which his international reputation was founded. The play combines realism with symbolism and the action is always enhanced by the poetry and inherent music within the text. This is a very large cast and it is probable that there will be some doubling by combining roles.
I will hope to cast in accordance with the timetable in June so that we can start working on text almost immediately before moving onto the floor. Subject to availability of cast there will be some August rehearsals. Reading copies will be available soon." |
