Introduction evening* (see note below): Friday 25th June at 7.45pm Auditions* (see note below): Sunday 27th and Monday 28th June at 7.45pm The Director writes: "In spite of its title, Ayckbourn's Bedroom Farce is not a traditional farce but instead a moving comedy showing four couples during one night in three bedrooms. As well as the humour, at times we see beautiful moments of sincerity showing the trials of married life from the honeymoon period to retirement." "As the action jumps from bedroom to bedroom, instead of a traditional reading on June 25 we'll be having an Introduction to the play with the producer Lisbeth Rake as Narrator and readings of some of the scenes to make it easier to follow. Please do come along and join the fun! If you'd like to read a script in advance please contact Lisbeth on 01794 388245 or The.rakes@zen.co.uk " "As with all Chesil productions ages given are approximate. It is more important that the six younger ones look like friends and that Trevor and Susannah could be the son and daughter-in-law of Ernest and Delia" Characters Ernest Late 50s-Early 70s Easy-going, patient and, liking a quiet life, accepts Delia's rather bossy instructions when necessary Delia Late 50s-Early 70s A no-fuss, sensible woman who knows how to organise her husband. Over-familiarity and acceptance has replaced events and excitement in their marriage. Trevor Late 20s-mid 40s Troubled son of Ernest and Delia and married to Susannah. Exhausted and frustrated by constantly working on difficult marriage and dealing with Susannah's moods. Susannah Late 20s-mid 40s Nervous and completely lacking in self-esteem. In the midst of an emotional crisis in her marriage making her erratic, needy and permanently on edge Malcolm Late 20s-mid 40s Married to Kate. Sense of fun and also fairness, but quickly annoyed following Trevor's behaviour. Stubbornly stays up until 3am doing comically bad DIY Kate Late 20s-mid 40s Also fun attitude. Not naturally very assertive, but sympathetic and thoughtful. Genuinely concerned that she's not an exciting enough person Nick Late 20s-mid 40s Married to Jan. Bedridden with a bad back the entire play, making him testy and sarcastic Jan Late 20s- mid 40s No-nonsense woman, pragmatic and self-assured. Straight-talker For the three beds, if you are able to lend any bedding, blankets, pillows, old sleeping bags etc or also any 1970s-looking coats they would be very gratefully received!. Likewise if you'd like to help backstage, just give me a ring. *NOTE: to get a part in a play you need only attend one of the auditions and you do not need to attend the Introduction Evening. You do not need to be a member of the Chesil Theatre to audition, but you must join if you take part in a production. The readings and auditions are held at the Theatre. |
