Hedda
Gabler |
20s/30s |
One of theatre’s most iconic
female roles. Hedda is newly married, bored, and selfish. Tormented by her
desire to live more fully, she tries to express herself by manipulating
others. Reckless and increasingly desperate, she lacks the courage to defy
convention. |
|
George
Tesman |
30s/40’s |
Hedda’s
husband is a kind, reliable but uninspired academic. Although he is devoted
to Hedda he doesn’t realise that he is unable to make her happy. |
|
Judge Brack |
40’s/60’s |
An old friend of the Tesman’s,
he is cynical and worldly. He enjoys interfering in the affairs of others.
He aims to take advantage of Hedda’s unhappiness to become her lover. |
|
Thea
Elvsted |
20s/30s |
An old
school friend of Hedda’s, she is very much in awe of her. Although she lacks
Hedda’s sophistication, Thea has the moral courage to leave her unloving
husband. She becomes Hedda’s adversary in the struggle to control Eilert
Lovborg. |
|
Eilert
Lovborg |
30s/40s |
A figure from Hedda’s past, he
is brilliant but erratic. Under Thea’s influence he has given up his
dissolute life and published a bestseller. |
|
Aunt
Juliana |
50s/60s |
She is well-meaning and
although old-fashioned she is more perceptive than Hedda gives her credit
for. She has been a mother to the orphaned George Tesman, and is devoted to
him. |
|
Berta |
50’s |
A faithful family servant who
finds it difficult to adapt to Hedda’s needs. |
