Earlier in the year nearly 200 entries were received to this fifth edition of the biennial nationwide competition. Each play was to contain no more than four characters and take no longer than 10 minutes to perform. This year’s theme involved a homage to the legendary David Bowie which the judges found was interpreted in a range of unique and inventive ways.
From the sublime to the ridiculous, daring and curious, heart-breaking and hilarious, the plays cover a range of genres. The ten winning writers include Winchester-based Jonathan Edgington and BBC Radio Solent presenter Nick Girdler.
Presentation of the plays this autumn coincides with the 50th anniversary of Chesil Theatre creating their permanent home in the medieval Church of St Peter Chesil. 1966 was also the year the first single credited to David Bowie was released. Not only known for his music, fashion and intriguing personas, Bowie was also a respected actor. It is therefore a fitting tribute that this year’s 10x10 New Writing Festival celebrates one of the most creative trailblazers of our time.
The 10x10 New Writing Festival takes place at the Chesil Theatre, in the heart of Winchester, over the weekend of 8th and 9th October at 2.30pm and 7.45pm. Tickets (£11) are now available online from www.chesiltheatre.org.uk, or call 0333 666 3366.
