Chesil Theatre Winchester is seeking four experienced actors for their show being presented in January 2016. John Buchan’s The 39 Steps, adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow, is a fast and frantic adventure set in the 1930s. Open auditions are being held on 11th/12th October with a light-hearted introductory reading on 9th October, all at 7.45pm.
Director Flavia Bateson said: “Although there are only four actors involved, they play over 100 characters, so on our intimate studio-style stage, this is going to be quite a challenge. Even the author admits that quite a lot of this show depends on the actors’ level of Olympian fitness!”
The four actors play:
- Richard Hannay – the hero, full of sturdy dependable British gung-ho
- Pamela/Annabella/Margaret – respectively plucky heroine, German spy and gentle Scots lass
- Actors 3 and 4 – play all the remaining parts from music hall compere to underwear salesman, mad professor to chirpy paperboy plus sundry policemen, heavies, hoteliers etc. This can be played with two male actors or one male, one female.
