About Us

Our Community
Find out directly from our members what they love about the Chesil - and why there’s no better time to get involved, with our exciting plans to build a bigger and more vibrant arts hub with extended and enhanced facilities.

We are currently progressing plans to create a second multi-purpose performance space, new foyer and bar and improved access and amenities for those with mobility impairments. Together with your help we can establish a wonderful community asset for generations to come, right in the centre of the City.  Click here for more information.

What We Do
Chesil Theatre is Winchester’s leading amateur theatre, renowned for performing high quality productions, ranging from comedy to classics. Alongside our reputation of presenting up to eight productions a year, we nurture new, innovative work alongside our traditional programme, driven by our bi-annual national new playwrighting festival, TakeTen. We also run two lively youth theatre groups as well as offering other theatre-related activities, stagecraft and technical training.

Our Values
Chesil Theatre strives to bring people from all backgrounds together in an environment where they can flourish. Our ambition is to promote a diverse, inclusive, and accessible culture, where people feel supported and respected, whilst challenged and inspired by theatre and the arts.

Community Outreach
Chesil Theatre’s outreach programme aims to reach out to our immediate community from disadvantaged children to the elderly. We also welcome community groups into our theatre, as well as visiting theatre companies needing a small-scale venue.

Our History
In the heart of the ancient city of Winchester, Chesil Theatre, formed as Winchester Dramatic Society, has been providing entertainment since 1863. In 1966 our home was established in the former 12th century church of St Peter Chesil. This historic medieval listed building provides an intimate 75-seat studio-style theatre and versatile performance space.

Chesil Theatre has a proud reputation as an excellent guardian of our medieval listed property which we have occupied since 1966. We have total responsibility for the upkeep of this historic building in one of Winchester’s prime Conversation Areas at the entrance to the city.
